JERUSALEM, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- A total of 262,563 people in Israel have received the third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in four days, the Ministry of Health said in a statement on Thursday.

Israel started its third dose vaccination campaign on Sunday following the recent sharp rise in COVID-19 morbidity in the country.

There are 1.2 million people eligible to receive the third dose in Israel, all of them aged 60 and over who were administered the second dose more than five months ago or have a weak immune system.

So far, the number of people who have received the first dose of vaccine in Israel stands at nearly 5.8 million, or 62.2 percent of its total population, while nearly 5.39 million have been administered the second dose.
